I got two books from the library in which to research my artist Anselm Kiefer. They are Anselm Kiefer by Daniel Arasse 730.92 and The High Priestess-Anselm Kiefer by Armin Zweite.

Anselm was born in Germany in 1945. Being born at the end of the war had a great influence on his work. He began his career with images directly inspired by nazi history and nazi architecture. For most of his career he dealt alot with painting but frequently moved into creating books and sculpture.

One of his most monumental works to date was a sculpture piece. The High Priestess or Zweistromland in german. It is made entirely from lead and steel. It is 13ft high with approximately 200 lead books. Some of these books are empty and some contain images. These images are photographs taken from the sky of the german landscape. Disused and disowned buildings bridges and farmland.

To see the contents of these lead books it would take several men to lift one due to the size and weight of them. Therefore leaving the contents concealed by the artist.

I choose to base my mind map on this piece of work because of its size and the fact its hard to understand why he made these books so concealed to the regular eye. I wanted to find out more about this and pass this information to my class.
